Charles Brett
Died on 18th September 1867
Sergeant Brett was in charge of a prison van which was transporting Fenian Prisoners, from Manchester Court to Belle Vue Prison, on Hyde Road, on 18th September 1867.
As the vehicle reached the railway bridge that crosses Hyde Road, it was attacked by a group of armed sympathisers, who demanded the release of the prisoners.
Sergeant Brett refused to hand over the keys of the vehicle and was shot and killed.
He was 51.
