We are pleased to offer the below as digital sessions beamed directly into your classroom or hall.
Workshop 1. What is a Peeler?
Is your class good enough to join the Victorian police force? In this workshop your class will learn who formed the police and why. We will work together using the museum’s collection to discover how policing has changed over time.
Your class will be introduced to Robert Peel and will investigate the day to day life of the Peeler; Everything from their uniform to their wages and lunches will be explored.
We will finish off with a timeline challenge exploring policing from 1066 to modern day.
Workshop 2. Victorian Crime and Punishment
Using historical documents and photographs we will follow in the footsteps of a Victorian criminal to digitally discover our police station. Together we will investigate crimes and how they were punished in the past.
In this session your class will be introduced to Owen, a real Victorian thief and will follow him through the charge office, cells and courtroom as we go on a justice journey.
We will uncover what would have happened in a Victorian police station, what it would have been like to spend the night in a holding cell and finally have the opportunity to follow a court case and work together to decide on the sentence.
