Laura’s Experience

In Blog by Helen Mallinson

Hi my name is Laura and I am a Museum Studies student, I have been volunteering at GMPM  for two months now.  My time here has been both positive and productive. I have gained a variety of  skills relevant to the work I am hoping to undertake in the future.

The tasks I have been given range from front of house work, this includes shop work and tour shadowing. I have also been lucky enough to be involved with some Archival work such as  library cataloging.

In addition I  have co-designed  a new leaflet for GMPM with Emma [another volunteer, pleasure to work with].   I have not only been fortunate enough to gain amazing hands on museum experience, I have also been able to work with the loveliest bunch of people a person could hope to meet.

The team at  GMPM have been so welcoming and so informative, thanks to their knowledge, patience and advice I feel I know a lot more about the building and policing in general. The building itself is so atmospheric with the Victorian charge office, cells and court room, you can really feel the history of the place.

I am looking forward to the upcoming weeks as I will be cataloging with the museum’s new software ‘Mimsy’.

Speak to you soon

Laura 🙂 xx
